Hey all first post here. I wanted to show my idea of my collar without the use of wood. I have tried using 2x4 before but just was not happy with the way they were. Either a no straight or to knotty. So the alternative I found was to use a product they sell at Lowes called Royal Trim. It's a pvc product that's paintable and has a flat side or wood look side. My piece cost around 35.00 dollars. The size I used is 1x5x10. I joined everything up fusing a Kreg joiner system. Caulked it after I set it with silicone. Once my taps arrive I'll drill the holes mount everything. Here are some pics so far. I think it has a better r values than wood plus I will be adding bubble insulation to it as well. Let me know what you all think.
Thank You.

Great idea using a different product for a collar. Moisture will definitely not be a problem like it can be for wood. Save your scraps in case extra thickness is needed to support the taps.

That looks nice, I haven't added a collar to my keezer yet but that looks like a nice option, thanks for posting.

It feels and acts just like wood cutting. With the Kreg system it actually pulls it together so tight when screwed better than wood. Been working for about 2 weeks now and cooler holds temp fine. I think it works better than wood.

I used the same product on my keezer collar
It's been great
The keezer died tho and I have a bigger one now
So I dunno what to do with collar

Did you have any issues, or lingering concerns, about the strength of the material specifically where you attach the lid hinges? I have read that product can have some voids inside which might cause a problem.

Found Veranda product (Royal Building Products S4S material) at Home Depot .75" x 7.25" x 8' for $26 per. I need 11.5 feet for my keezer, going to use the Kreg system also for pocket holes.

Glad to hear this material is working well, can't wait to get mine put together.

I have had no issues with it. The hinges are really secure as they don't pull really at that point. I just used some 1inch screws and drilled pilot hole. All in all I am very happy with it. Everyone that comes over thinks it was bought that way. :)

Yeah no issues here, ive never mitered before so i just cut mine square and did a simple butt joint, still plenty strong although not as aesthetic. Spray painted it a hammered copper color and i love it, eventually ill do a skirt around the bottom the same color.
