A Santa Cruz graduate student has been sentenced to a drug diversion program for making a batch of morphine-laced beer.
Chad Renzelman pleaded no contest to heroin possession, saying he used "a handful" of dried poppy pods to flavor a batch of home-made beer. Police found the batch of beer in his garage during the summer.
The UC Santa Cruz organic chemistry student says he extracted opium from the poppies, which he then converted to morphine.
The 28-year-old Renzelman says the beer was for home consumption and he didn't know his actions were illegal.
Renzelman must participate in a drug diversion program and, if he stays out of trouble, the offense will be cleared from his record.

So he got done with dry poppying?

He didn't know using chemical processes to isolate morphine from opium and then add it to beer was illegal...either he's playing stupid or he's incredibly stupid. Morphine isn't like Percocet, folks...it can make you stop breathing and it doesn't take much.

:fro:when I started home brewing I thought about dry hopping a batch with marijuana. Never tried it, but thought about it. May get better results using it during the boil. Probably take an ounce to 5 gal, but figure if hops are a relative of the marijuana couldnt hurt to try. :fro:

I have not, but have a trip planned next summer up the coast, so I might have to stop in for a pint. I take it they must brew with actual hemp in order to avoid the THC in the beer?
