Have an IPA now in the secondary. Dry hopped on day 5 in secondary. Was going to put in my second round of hops and I see something I have never seen.... Looks like some kind of growth. Never had this happen before and I've used the hop bags in the past. Thoughts?

Kinda looks like yeast rafts to me but I could be totally wrong...what yeast did you use?

As I'm sure you've read secondaries really aren't necessary anymore unless you are adding fruit or another adjunct...when I dry hop I do it in primary on day 14 cold crash day 19 keg day 20-21 drink day 28.

Interested to see what others say though...

Id been interest to here what others say also..Its already racked of the yeast cake in a secondary.Granted 5 days was to early.

if you racked off to secondary after 5 days i can almost guarantee you that your yeast hadn't come close to dropping out of the beer. Racking to secondary that early can also restart fermentation especially if your beer wasn't finished which is also a significant possibility if you racked after 5 days. Did you take gravity before racking?

Thats not an infection .. yeast or protein break which is weird being in secondary. The best way to tell is taste. If it tastes good your winning.
I agree on not using secondary. I rack into a secondary vessel only to bottle straight away. Dry hop in primary. As far as leaving it in 2ndry the risk of infection is high and oxygenation is higher.

I used Safale US-05 Ale Yeast for this brew. It looks like it could be yeast, just never saw it hanging out up at the top like it is.

I didn't rack into secondary on day 5... It was in primary just about 2 and a half weeks.... All fermentation was complete. I dry hopped 5 days after putting into secondary. Have one more hop addition 5 days before bottling.
