I had some bottles soaking in a bucket that had some used star san solution in it. And the lables weren't coming off so i decided to use oxy clean to soak them. I got a bin and mixed up the oxyclean with hot water and threw the bottles in the bin. And they still had the star san solution in them cause stupid me didn't dump them out before throwing them in the oxyclean bin. I didn't think this was a posionous mixture but just wanted to be sure seeing i have dogs and a kid. Will mixing star san with oxyclean be harmfull. Thanks

I would suggest, if in doubt, dump the mixture, rinse the bottles, and put them in a new bath. Oxyclean is cheap. Hospital bills aren't.

I would just soak em and rinse the daylights out of them and then use them. Starsan, at the proper solution is safe enough to drink (so I've read). I think if you rinse them good enough, they'll be fine. If you've ever used oxyclean, you know that it needs a real good rinse to be totally rid of it anyway. As long as you're not gonna let the solution sit around in a puddle for the kids to play in and the dog to drink, you should be fine. Just wash away whatever you dump with the hose and you'll be good to go.

Those two don't have the kind of reaction that say bleach and ammonia would have.

They are no more dangerous when mixed. They also cease being effective cleaners when mixed, if I'm not mistaken. So don't forget to sanitize.

Hospital bills? Not likely.

Maybe. Not the point.

If I did something that could put my family or myself in harm's way, and fixing the problem was as easy and cheap as fixing this problem is, I wouldn't be posting a thread on a forum, and waiting for a response. Even if taking care of it was difficult or expensive, safety always comes first.

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE OMG OMG OMG..... GRAB THE BEERS, I MEAN CHILDREN, AND GET OUT!!!!!

but seriously, like inodora said, just dump it and make a new solution.... oxiclean is cheap

Not a problem. But using oxyclean will leave a residue/film behind, and is extremely hard to rinse off well. The trick is to use two buckets, one with oxyclean, the other with a strong (like, way above sanitizer concentration) star san solution. Soak in oxyclean until the labels fall off, quick rinse so you're not carrying over too much oxyclean, into the star san bucket, rinse. The acidity in the star san breaks down the detergent agent that's in oxyclean and gives you a totally clean, residue/film free bottle. You can feel the film from the oxyclean start to break down almost immediately as it goes into the star san.

I have noticed that the star san solution starts to 'break down' and get to be less effective as I put bottles through (this is why I try to get at least some of the oxyclean off before I put it in the star san).

Apparently, vinegar works in place of the star san, but I haven't tried that. I need to get a bottle of vinegar, because I think it's probably cheaper than star san.

On another note, I reuse the oxyclean solution. Probably putting over 100 bottles with labels on them through the same 5 gallon bucket of oxyclean solution 15-20 at a time.

Just to recap, to strip labels off of bottles.
1. Oxyclean soak (overnight at the most)
2. QUICK rinse in the sink
3. Short (like, <1 minute) Star San soak
4. Good rinse, until the bottle feels totally clean and residue free

I would say dump the old solution, from what I've experienced, star san and oxyclean counteract each other.

Starsan is just an acid (and fairly mild when diluted...the active ingredient is a major component of Coca-Cola, after all). Mixed with oxiclean it shouldn't be any more "poisonous" than the oxiclean itself -- which I seem to remember the crystals dissolve causing a reaction that creates hydrogen peroxide, something that's not really too good to drink in large quantities unless you really want to throw up (though in small quantities is perfectly fine, people brush their teeth and rinse their mouths with it all the time).
