i'm new to this and made my first batch yesterday and when i was all done i put my air lock into my ferminter lid and put tap water in it when i went to pick it up some of the tap water went up the air lock and down into my brew about a half once or so is this going to cause a problem?

Probably not. Half an ounce of tap water is a small amount, and as long as your yeast get a head-start, you're gonna be fine. Just wait it out a bit, you'll see that the yeast are hearty buggers.

Welcome to homebrew talk! That shouldn't be a problem, as you have five gallons of beer and only an extra half once of water. Where you might come into problems, however, is if the water had any contaminants. In the future, you might consider using extra sanitizer or vodka in the airlocks (as these are will kill all germs they come in contact with!).

+1 to vodka in the airlock. If any gets sucked back in, it won't hurt the brew and will add a little alcohol. Plus, if you get a little thirsty... :D

If it is a three piece airlock...next time do this.

1. Insert the base piece (with no water in it) into the hole in the fermenter lid.
2. Drop the cylindrical piece in.
3. Fill with water (notice the cylindrical piece has the nice top on it that lets the water flow over it, but not into the fermenter.
4. Put the lid on.

I did the same thing you did on my first batch! No worries.

This but use vodka instead of water,

Fine either way...but as long as the airlock is sanitized, and your water quality is good (I.E. it doesn't make you sick when you drink it)...isn't Vodka overkill?

It is the same as topping your wort off with tap water (which I do).

Sometimes it is a problem, for instance on long fermentations I have had fruit fly worms in the airlock, if the temperature drops significantly, like from summer to winter, it will suck water into the fermenter because of contraction of the brew. Not a problem if you're brewing a wild beer I guess.;)
