Was curious about the classroom's thoughts on the SMaSH/DMaSH/DMaDH requirements/restrictions...I know you can do "anything" you want when brewing, but to "comply" with the SMaSH concept, can you add any adjuncts to the recipe beside hops and yeast? Can you add spices? Honey? Sugar? Or once you've added "more", are no longer smashing?

A SMASH is single MALT and single HOP. I would say that spice and or honey would not fit the bill of malt or hop and therefore it would still be a SMASH beer in my book.

Yes, but the concept of a SMaSH is to learn what individual hops and malts bring to your beer. I can't see spices or honey doing anything but get in the way.

I agree with JustLooking. By adding adjuncts, you are going to have other flavors and aromas popping up that could make it more difficult to isolate the character of your malt and hops. Obviously like you said you can do whatever you like, but it wouldn't really be a SMaSH.

SMaSHaSS! That's awesome!

Thanks for the feedback...I was more curious than anything about everyone's definition (how strict) of SMaSH.
