I opened a La Dalmatienne tonight. It basically tasted line a Gin and Tonic in beer form. Medicinal, almost Juniper-like, bitterness. Slight lime and orange. Very bitter.

My first sip, I thought "This is interesting. I think I like it."

It got harder to drink with each subsequent sip.

this was my first time trying the US new label design tome. (ive alway avoided it for the tire fire/smoked concern.) it was purchased within the last couple months in NY when ete dropped. im happy to report that this particular bottle was out of control good. lemony citrus, mild tartness with a backing of grain and a light, clean yeastiness to it. perfect carbonation and absolutely crushable but lacked the earthen brett/fantome funk i love. regardless, i would buy cases of this if promised all bottles in said case would be identical to this one

Drank a Saison recently with the US label that was outrageous. Also recently happened upon a small fortune of Ete Bottles(not sure how old, I'm assuming newest batch) Would it be worth it to buy more if I could? I've seen that some have had carb issues ect. I feel like I have to stockpile If I can since Tomes don't come to Pittsburgh at all.

I went 2 for 2 with flat bottles, but I've seen people post pics of perfectly carbed bottles.

get one, drink immediately and form your own opinion about whether you should get more or not.

i have another bottle in the fridge to drink soon and so far ive found this newest batch of ete to be the most lackluster of any vintage of ete ive tried. having said that...i am a tome whore and still have a case stockpiled to monitor its development/progress

last bottle i opened had a lot of pear/apple character

I think thats what I will do, just pop one open soon and see how it is. Hope it's carbed and its a good batch I've never had ETE before. I will report back once I open one.

Reporting back. Opened a bottle Ete, not even a glimmer of carbonation. Apple/Pear/pineapple would be a good way to describe the taste. Unmistakably Fantome flavor though through the finish. Really wish it was carbed. I'm happy I didn't buy more though. Hoping at least 1 of the others I got is carbed

I am 0 for 2 on Ete so far when it comes to carbonation. I still have one more that I will sit on for a while. It sucks, because I think this beer would be awesome with some prickly carbonation.

shared a bottle of Pissenlit over the weekend. not sure what year.

not... for me. nothing wrong with the carbonation, no sludge, everything appeared normal but the flavor was not something i enjoyed.

That bums me out, I have a few bottles of pissenlit too. Hope they are better than yours was.

probably more a palate thing than a "it's not a good beer" thing

none of us liked it but that doesn't mean you won't

I love Pissenlit. If it isn't for you shoot me a message and I'm sure we can work something out. Also would love ALL the Ete, carbed or not.

wasn't mine and there was only one bottle

sorry

for whatever reason...pissenlit (even by tome standards) has always been an extreme wild card in the tomefolio. i dont think any 2 pissenlit experiences have been the same for me. the last time i had it, it suffered from the smoke/bandaid era and ive not had it that many times since. though prior experiences have ranged from "what the **** this is amazing" to "whatever." some bottlings taste completely meh void of much character at all. though ive had a couple too that were sour and heavily brett'd with classic tome funk that i thought were show stoppers.

as much as i love Fantome and remain hopeful that the newest batch of ete will age and get better, i remain somewhat doubtful that this particular batch will reach prior batch greatness.

Agree with you on all counts. But isn't half the fun with these bottles the possibilities of what they may be? I kind of love not knowing what I'm going to get.

its kinda funny you mention this...

when reviewing beer or revisiting brews ive loved in the past, its easy to shame and degrade a brewery for not having consistency. however, ive always looked the other way in this regard to fantome. the ghost...and the shroud of mystery/inconsistency is what captivates me.

who am im kidding? ive bought/stashed bottles knowing/thinking they "wernt that good" hoping the next time i open one, my opinion might be totally different

I picked up one of the Artist Series swingtop bottles yesterday, because they were marked down from $24 to $14. I'll report back with the results this evening.
I'd buy another one at $14 I think. As I recall it was interesting, little funky, but not worth the price tag at $25+.

you guys are making me anxious about the pissenlits i have stockpiled.... i hope they are good
I have always enjoyed it. All this talk makes me want to revisit, looking for bottles later today.

Kind of funny you mention the Fantome double standard. I'm guilty of it too. I drank a La Dalmatienne last week that was like a very bitter, overly herbal Gin and Tonic, only in beer form. After my first couple sips, I had to hold my breath and just down big gulps to get it down**, much like when I drank White Tavern Vodka in college. Each time I did this, I sort of laughed and thought "Ohhh Fantome, you bastard." If this was any other brewery, I would never buy their product again.

**I just can't drain pour a $20 Tome.

when i first had it fresh, the yeast profile was so clean tasting that it made me sad that it reminded me of just another everyday run of the mill belgian with strong malt profile

i have a couple more tucked away for science...and 100% agree with your sentiment. not worth $20+ bucks but at 14 yep yep yep

hearing you say some funk is coming out makes me want to revisit asap
