Had one a couple weeks ago, got it in Toledo. It was relative new, though, because they were out of tomes a few weeks prior to *that* visit. So at least it was a fresh delivery.

Like dontdrinkbeer said, there's no way to know batch from batch but at this point, you're probably safe.

I've never had an undrinkable FS, I've had some with that mild smoke & middle school pink eraser taste but honestly I didn't even really mind them all that much.

I can confirm that Fantome is still "very serious grooving"! I had these great beers (plus many more) with DanyP last week:

For those of you who have not been to Fantome, or met Dany, he is perhaps the kindest brewer in the universe. Truly a generous man, making humble, honest, and delicious beer!

The two bottles in the middle are the same beer with two different versions of the label. Very similar to "Printemps", but with more orange/citrus character. I believe he said it was made for a local organization/event that wanted a "drinkable/quaffable" beer. Dany had this on tap and it was really great! The "Coffee Ruby" is a stronger, amber beer with coffee. Also a unique, very Fantome type of beer.

I can also attest that the recent batches of the older label saison, or Biere Artisinale Sur Lie are in fact everything that beer has been in the past.

Are these smokey bottles the classic saison with the newish/revised label that is similar to the newer glossy hiver/printemps labels or the older sur lie label?

I had one of these last night. Twas smokey and skunky. The skunk was probably from sitting on a shelf. Need more regular saison!

Hell of a party thrown by Duntôme. Highlights for me were the Extra Sour Batch 1 (tasted like regular Fantôme saison with a bit more acidity), Fantôme Saison (2004), and Fantôme Saison (2011). Bit of a theme there

Otherwise, Sante 1 and 2 were surprisingly good considering their age, and especially when compared against some of the latter ones. Magic Ghost is still quite good in my opinion.

There was plenty of messy rubber, phenol, plastic, "tire fart" in plenty of the bottles, but that seems to finally be past them now, as the new World Cup beer (De Tous les Diâpes) was very nice.

Did you get any smoke off the regular saison at all? I had one Friday that was smokey.

Define long time. If it's the two piece paper labels buy them up for sure. If it's the glossy 1-piece Shelton labels there is a good shot they are not so good.
