Good news is a friend who grows hops but doesn't currently brew sent me a pound or so of nicely dried Cascade leaf hops. These are in addition to the 8 OZ Cascade I salvaged off my vine this year. His hops are nicer, grown in dry CO climate, mine were a little wet all year. Usually I only use leaf hops post boil, but going these for boil, or I'll have them forever. No idea what IBU is, but they smell like hops. Probably clog my current set up, will know in an hour or so.

Not so good, I felt I should use 5# of Weyerman Abby malt I bought last year for some reason, so in it went today w 15# pils. I can already tell by wort it is going to be a more syrupy beer than I usually like to drink.

I'm not complaining, but my thrifty nature is causing me to use stuff I would not normally brew with. And maybe I should not order ingredients while drunk, huh?

Anyone experience this syndrome?

Looking at 10#s of Melodian and Special B on shelf I got sort of by mistake w dread. (haha) I'll probably use one or two pounds at a time for accent rather than the impulsive malt dump I made today.

Sounds like a tasty brew to me. Maybe? Update us on how it comes out.

Some descriptors of abbey malt sound great; malty, nutty, biscuit... others give me pause; honey, sweet.

Yes, for me it is rye. Due to having a 50# sack of it, I have been drinking rye beers for the last two years... my Oktoberfest this year is a roggenbier! I am finally out of the rye so I can move on to some different styles now.

Well, the brew went very smoothly, the wort tastes promising, less cloying than expected, mashed it on the cool side, so should ferment out pretty well. I think it will be a very drinkable beer.

The whole leaf cascade as first wort hops did not clog torpedo screen as I feared, in fact, it made the hot break clump together better for a nice clear wort into hop back.

Rye malt is my favorite adjunct, 50#s is a lot, I probably would use that over course of a year. Unmalted rye, I don't have any experience with .

Time to order some more base malts, going to do it before beer o clock today.
