Ive been inconsistent in my hitting my OG recently id say since i starged crushing my grain. Im wondering if this is the case. Could crushing it too much or not enough causing my issue?

Thx in advance

Yes, it absolutely could. When I first started crushing my own grain I did not have the drill speed dialed in yet and my efficiency would vary. Once I got that right I started hitting my OG every time.

Yes, it can. It's not the only thing that can cause swings in mash efficiency, but it's one of the contributors.

Have you noticed a change in your mash efficiency? Are your pre-boil SG numbers not what you are anticipating?

There are many reasons why your mash or brew house efficiency could vary.

To figure it out,you need to separate them in two. Mash efficiency = later effects × conversion eff.

The most likely cause for poor or variable conversion efficiency is crush issues.

Later efficiency on the other hand varies with grain bill and recipe, so in order to troubleshoot that you have to use batch spare efficiency simulatuons, such as the one built into my mash calculator. Then compare what you get, to what was estimated, using your average efficiency as a base line.

I experience varying efficiency in my system. BigMack, how did you dial in your drill speed and how would that make a difference? If your rollers are set, does the speed make that much of a difference?

If your speed is set too high it won't properly crush all the grain going through. If you look up your specific mill it should have a recommended speed. From there it was just a little trial and error for me until I dialed in the exact speed I needed for the right crush.

I would leave the crush alone and brew another batch of what you just made and see what happens. If you're making different beers and different mash profiles then also changing your crush you're chasing a moving target. Set it to 0.034 gap and brew a SMaSH or something simple you like. Change the crush only and make a second batch the same way and see what happens.
