Don't use them. I used to have problems with (I think) sierra nevada bottles. They were little stubbies. Eventually, I stopped using 12 oz bottles at all except for a few for competition. I really like the larger 1/2 litre german bottles. Free from german restaurants, as many as you can all, nightly :)

I love my stubbies - they cap really well with my cheap Chinese bench capper, and I like the shape more - both aesthetically and the feeling of holding it in my hand - than a longneck.

I love my German half-liters as well, and they're a lot easier to get here in China because a lot of bars sell Paulaner, Franziskaner, and Kostritzer. However, my only bottle bomb so far was a German half-liter, and when I cleaned it up I found that the glass was extremely thin, a millimeter or so, so I'm very wary of those bottles now.

Bench capper early on. Hate the wing cappers. Always felt like a little lateral pressure and I'd shoot the bottle out across the room. Bench capper means speed too. Much easier to use. I mounted mine to a board and clamp that to the bench I use for bottling. Super stable.

Yeah, I've had some issues with shorter bottles too. Thought about just eliminating those bottles from my supply, but I can get them to cap - with a little more care and effort. But, you're not alone - long necks are much easier IMO.

I almost exclusively use SN / founders / lagunitas bottles with a wing capper. Never had any trouble.

My capper is wing type and the only writing on it are the words "Made in Italy".....I ONLY use S.N. stubbies and have for over two years. Never one problem.

I try and use the larger 1/2 liter bottles because I think it's easier, however, I used to use exclusively Boulevard bottles, and still do to supplement. I had the same capper and have not run into any problems.

I'll have to pay closer attention the next time I bottle.

I threw away all of my Lagunitas bottles. Would not work well with my red wing capper. Sierra Nevada bottles were better, but still didn't crimp as tight as the standard longnecks.

Not all Red Barron cappers were created equal I have 2, one works fine on these bottles & one gives me a lot of trouble I'm not sure what the difference between the 2 is but I would say almost half my bottles are these stubby bottles...

Also true about the ring around the neck the one that works well will cap both kinds no problem, but my other one will only cap the Sierra Nevada style neck but not the Founder's style, it still has problems with the SN bottles some times though.
