I've never heard of anyone mashing in the oven, hmmm... my pots wouldn't fit.

Yeah, it's one of those quirky advantages of partial mashing small batches. The control isn't that great in that you can mash only in 5 degree increments but I can hold 150 for as long as I like.
It's talked about a lot in the 1 gallon brewing thread. What's your oven but an insulated box with a heater in it?

I have enough pot to mash about 7 lbs of grain at 1.25 qts per pound, and it fits in the oven. Generally not enough grain for 5-gallon batches. I've been thinking about a 3-gallon setup, but I already have 5 gallon and 6 gallon fermenter/carboy sets for beer and wine.

Lately I've been BIAB, 5 gallon batches. My nine gallon brew pot fits in the oven with a rack on the lowest level. I just turn the oven on for a few minutes to warm it up first.

Yeah, I have been thinking about a dedicated brew kettle, but I do OK with my current equipment. When I get a bigger house with more space I might consider some upgrades. I can make the table beer and wines that I like to drink and am playing with more complex and interesting recipes. I'm also not really into big beers; I don't stray over 5% ABV very often so I really don't need too much more pot. A 5 gallon kettle would be about perfect.

I discovered last night that my milk stout *MUST* be chilled in the refrigerator for it to pour cleanly. I used US-05 in it and it simply refuses to settle out unless it is cold crashed for several days. This stuff has been in the bottle for almost 4 months now, and it was in the fermenter for 4 weeks. Really nasty looking to pour a nice stout and see that it is full of yeast floaties. It tastes great, but the presentation is very off-putting. I never had that problem with the other ale yeasts. Using Nottingham I can pretty much pour like it is a filtered beer, even if warm the sediment in the bottom doesn't budge at all.

Well, I woke up to a migraine this morning. I went to the store for groceries, came home and crashed and I feel better now, just tired. We had a big front pass through last night - weather changes seem to be a big trigger for me.

I took a nap, then went to make a salad for lunch. I sliced the end of my thumb with the mandolin and burned my other thumb. I think this is a sign that I should take it easy and not attempt anything adventurous today.

I'm glad you got rid of the migraine, those suck.

I decided to buy a chest freezer after all. I got a 7 cubic foot one from sams today. The build is going to be so much easier this way. It should fit 3 kegs comfortably, and the 10lb co2 tank. I decided to buy new as I would be constantly wondering if a used freezer would go out on me. I don't want to go to the work of building this thing and have it crap out in a year.

I figure I can do 3 phases to this setup. The first will be just the basic setup with the plastic faucets. That will require opening the lid to dispense. The second will be installing real faucets through the collar, and probably installing longer liquid lines. The ones I've got now are only 5'. The third will involve getting a third regulator, and setting things up to make 2l of soda off of an external line. The last one may not happen at all, it will depend on my usage.

In order to get this setup I still need a temp controller, and to build the collar. That's in addition to the stuff I listed previously. I'll take measurements for the collar later tonight.

My oven has a warm hold setting that lets me dial in 150F. And it is pretty accurate too. It fires up just when you put the pot in, maybe once or twice again over a 1+ hr mash. Nice and stable.

Congrats LG! Good decision to go with a freezer. Fridges are great and no need to mess around with a temp controller but I can see the ergonomic (if thats the right word) advantage to a freezer. Keep us updated with pics of your build. :mug:

These are the carboard cutouts I made so I could see how things would fit. Here's how they actually fit.

The freezer is taller then I thought it was. With 3 kegs I don't have to build a collar for the freezer at all. :) I could fit a fourth keg by building a stand for it, moving the co2 bottle to the compressor hump, and building a collar to make it tall enough. I'm not planning on doing that for a while.

I can get the co2, regulators, manifolds etc.. all inside the freezer without putting anything on the compressor hump. For the time being anyway, I'm going to put bottles on it.

They sell 2.5 and 3 gallon kegs - maybe you could stick one or two of them on the compressor hump? Not sure if that works with your brewing plans, just a thought.

EDIT: I'm seeing 15" being about the typical height of these 2.5 gallon kegs. Do you have that amount of space above the compressor hump?

I have 17 3/4" of clearance from the compressor hump with the lid closed.

I'm looking at my co2 tank and trying to figure out if it's been certified. I'm thinking the answer is no, but I'm not sure.

DOT, certifies them. Recently they cracked down around here. Good news, no extra charge and once certified you're good for a number of years. At least five.

LG,

Also, if you go to a place where you turn your tank in and they rent you a replacement...The expiration date on the turn in; they don't care about.

Happy Fall everyone!

I've been doing all sorts of brewery chores this weekend. Yesterday I bottled my test batch of watermelon IPA. It tasted pretty good out of the bottle bucket, but it was a little too bitter for my tastes. I should have dialed back on the IBU's. It still tasted pretty good in spite of that. Watermelon flavor is definitely there. I also racked my Saison on to about 6lbs of peach puree. I ended up thawing the peaches, pureeing, and then I pasteurized the puree at 180F for 20 mins. A very aggressive second fermentation is now taking place. The peach bits are churning around in the better bottle very nicely.

LG... good going on the chest freezer. Are you planning a collar or a tower? If you go with a collar you might gain enough height for the co2 tank on the hump.

For the time being, I'll probably just get the rest of the stuff for the gas setup and the temperature controller. When I have the extra cash, I'll probably build a collar and add the 4th keg. It isn't going to break my heart to open the coffin to dispense for a while. :)

Ah! Gotcha!

After building my fermentation freezer with a collar I realized I didn't want a collar on my keezer. As it turns out lifting 5 gallon fermenters out of a deep area that's made even deeper with the collar is hard on the old back. I didn't want that problem with the keezer, so I ended up building the tower.

I can't imagine having a keg - gallons and gallons of tasty, cold, carbonated homebrew available at the pull of a handle. That would be great until the police and the animal control officers hauled me away.
TC, you make me want to put my unscheduled sunrise mix drink on tap. :fro:

Yeah, I think that would get me Tasered for sure.
In a 20 oz glass:

6 oz of everclear
2 6mg crushed melatonin tablets
1 200mg crushed caffeine tablet
1 crushed vitamin B complex tablet
1 sugar free mango peach energy drink packet
2 oz of simple syrup, or corn syrup
12 oz of tonic water

Mix all of the powdered ingredients with the alcohol in a separate container, then the syrup. Pour on top of the tonic water in a 20 oz glass.

For best effect, drink as fast as possible....When you wake up, don't be surprised if you are either on the top of a mountain or in federal prison. :fro:

:drunk: No...that definitely wouldn't end well. Not well at all.

I think if I make it to 80 I might brew this up then, but not before. Same with your coffee wine.

EDIT: I think the finishing touch on that recipe would be some powdered Viagra or Cialis.

Haha! Yeah, they are both evil. This one is named after the nickname for an air to air nuclear missile. It's much much worse then the coffee wine.

Keep the Genie in the bottle!
I've only actually drank that three times. Mostly because I wanted to know if I'd hit the effect I was aiming for. I figured if it nailed 340lb me to the floor, I'd gotten it right. :D That was a couple of years ago. I don't drink so much anymore, and I've lost 40 lbs.

Don't have everclear what do you think if I substituted "my sea water"?;)

LG, you like to walk on the wild side don't ya?! I almost never like to mix meds and alcohol. I seriously get scared that I'll go to bed and never wake up. With that said, when I was suffering so much pain from my teeth I mixed hydrocodone and alcohol a couple times, and it did take away the pain and help me sleep.

My label states "Alcohol may intensify it's effect" = Less pain;)
Can't drink with a migraine though

I feel for those of you that get headaches and migraines. I guess I'm lucky, because I never get them.

That might work. :D

Well, I did concoct this recipe after doing shrooms. I was trying to replicate the body high. This recipe isn't far off.

I was wishing I had some yesterday... Sort of. Had a problem with wanting pain pills when I wasn't in pain. So I'm really careful about them now.

My back is still messed up, but not as bad as yesterday.

My body builds up a tolerance very quickly to drugs Migraine shots 1-2 in a month 3rd is useless, pain pills have to rotate different types if taken for more the a couple of days. Novocain2-3 times in the same month = 5-7 injections lasts only 1/2 hour. My dentist says he only had one other close to my type shots had no effect on him at all. Don't care for most drugs anyway as it slow my thinking, alchol I can think with... I don't drink til stupid (to old for that);)

I'm with you on the novocaine. 40 minutes max for me. Plus it only kinda works. Lidocaine is 20 minutes, but it does actually work.

Yeah, I'm pretty much done with drinking myself stupid. Maybe once in a while if I've got a migraine or something, but mostly no. I have a drink or two to relax is all.
I never tried shrooms when I was young. Did plenty of other stupid stuff, though.
Don't bother, not even close to the hype. It's a nice body high, but not worth the risk, or the cost.

That's why I made a drink to simulate the effects. That's legal, easier to get, and about 1/10th the cost. Like I said though, I'm pretty much done drinking myself stupid.

Yeah, I wouldn't try shrooms even if I could get them at this point. I don't really drink to get drunk anymore either these days. Every once in a while I do, but that's only maybe 3-4 times a year.

I don't know what ****ty shrooms you got but it sounds more like fly agaric. Psilocybin mushrooms produce an intense psychedelic experience. Any body load is a distant secondary effect. I'd try to explain what that's like... but I don't even know if it's possible.

I got closed eye visuals. Mostly geometrics. Some halos around light sources. I wasn't impressed.

I can give myself closed eye visuals without any drugs at all. I've seen similar halos around things from an impending migraine.

Sounds like just a threshold psychedelic dose. The walls should be breathing, the floor rippling in waves, color more vibrant than you've ever seen... and that's just the BASIC visual stuff. The main effect in my opinion is how it affects your thought and logic processes... that's the part I have difficulty explaining. The first time I did it (LSD actually, but very similar), I didn't even think it was possible to "go back" to normal, like something had been unlocked.
