Hi guys and gals, I just joined today and wanted to say hello and I look forward to picking everyone's brains and hopefully contribute any insight I have as well. I'm from Sacramento, California and very green when it comes to brewing beer. However I do have a background in food industry and cooking. What I am actually looking for is someone who can assist in starting a small single keg brew system and make small batches of various beers. At some point I would like to figure out local laws (California) about health and safety and also licensing for production and distribution. I am an avid craft beer drinker and would like to figure out how to start a company in brewing. Most likely I would need a experienced brewer that is wanting to partner up with me. I have funds to start a small scale local set up, but need direction and technical knowledge. I am more of a venture capitalist if you think about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
  • Hello, and welcome from the other side of the country. Hope we can be of assistance. Best advise I can give you is to grab a copy of "The Complete Joy of home brewing" by Charlie Papazian", or "How to Brew" by John Palmer. Both great books and must reads for every new brewer. Then just dive in.....

I'm not a professional brewer. I have been homebrewing for about 5 years now. I'd suggest you start listening to the various podcasts from the brewing network. They have started to focus more and more on pro-brewery issues.

From what I understand it would be nearly impossible to make any kind of money on a brewery that small. If you are looking to get legal to sell your beer to a few friends, knock yourself out. But if you want to be able to pay a brewer and get something out of your venture capital investment you are going to need a much bigger system with a decent retail or distribution outlet. I think I have heard them say before that about a 5 barrel system is where you can make enough beer to overcome the labor of brewing to make some kind of profit.
 
Welcome! Homebrew Talk (HBT) is a great resource. I’m glad that you’re here.

You might look up some of the great online resources for brewery management - Siebel Institute or even closer to home, UC Davis is UCSD come to mind.
