Hi All,
I made my first batch yesterday afternoon. I thought i might have messed it up since i could not get an accurate temperature before putting the yeast in. I guess this means the wort was not too hot then. Is it ok to sprinkle the yeast in, stir and place lid on like kit instructions say, or is it better to heat it up first, dissolve it etc.?

I was confused on how to do the hydrometer, so did not get a reading. Do i still need to get one or just leave it alone since it is bubbling? I see bubbles every 1-2 seconds, the temp is at 66-68. I have the bucket in a closet.

Thanks. I have definately learned a few things with this first batch.

Dry yeast is normally ok to just sprinkle in. Before I switched to liquid yeast, I would always rehydrate in a cup of warm (80-95 degree) water while I was boiling, and about half way through the boil, I would feed a 1/8 cup of my wort to the yeast (Just to make sure it started bubbling and was healthy). However, none of this is necessary. I've brewed many a batch where I just sprinkled the dry yeast into the carboy and let'er fly.

There's not much point in taking a reading now.

A reading at the start (before pitching yeast) combined with a reading at the end is useful to let you know alcohol content.

A reading at the end is a good way to know if the fermentation is done.

A reading half-way through fermentation is just a chance to infect the beer.

Sounds perfect. The yeast are certainly healthy and happy. Congrats!

I'm on my 7th brew and have never used the hydrometer correctly. I guess I should take the time to figure it out sometime, but I'm more into the art than the science.

hell, I don't even HAVE a hydrometer anymore. the funny thing is... my beer doesn't seem to notice. :)
 
I used a hydrometer on my first few batches but always forgot on the others. No big deal. :cross:
