Me and SWMBO spent 4 days north of Napa in Yountville couple years back. We never found any winery that was snobby just plenty of other visitors that were fun to watch make fools of them self. One of the $$$ wineries (Silver Oak) was busy and fun. Later on we found out the guy serving us and making fun of the snobby group was one of the owners. Would have never guessed he was in a company polo and docker shorts.

+2 on not getting dressed up more than shorts and t-shirt.

Cakebread bugged me having to schedule a tasting however it was worth it. Tastings are done in a garden with one of their staff for your group and it is totally laid back.

OP have a fun time and you will probably find a wine you like. Just be honest with the staff and they will probably try to find something you might like better.

He persuasively makes the case that there is far more diversity in beer styles than in wine styles, leading to greater opportunities for pairing.

I'd agree with that. Even though wine gets the reputation as the "sophisticated" drink, beer has a whole lot more variation between the lightest pilsner and the biggest RIS, IMHO.

My wife and I are visiting California wine country in 5 weeks. She gets to decide wineries to visit, and my only stipulation is that we ARE going to the Russian River brewpub.

I didn't even consider that I might have to dress up. Interesting. I suppose I have to practice my wine spitting technique too :)

I recommend visiting Charbay distillery when you are in Napa.

Hate to break it to you, man, but being able to spew bull****, pretentions descriptions out of your mouth or keyboard, i.e. writing taste reviews, has nothing to do with the actual ability to taste.

So if what you're saying is true, then theoretically if we take the flower smelling analogy into play here...one could say I could write reviews on florists and their specific arrangements. But then we'd both be wrong because as I stated earlier, to me all flowers smell like funeral homes or churches. So if my issue with wine is that I can't tell the difference taste wise between a 3 buck chuck and a $20 bottle of the same style red or white then no I have no business writing taste reviews. Or did I misunderstand your point.

Yep, you misunderstood my point. I'm on your side, man. If you taste a beer you like, great.. If you taste a wine you like, great. To hell with the intellectualism.
