Hi. My son gave me a Mr. Beer for Christmas (don't laugh), and I have just tasted the first swig of what I/we did. I was impressed, if I do say so my own bad self, and want to continue this, and learn to do it the right way. But in the meantime, how does one determine the alcohol content? I see on other posts where it can be estimated based on what you put in, but for the short term while I'm still learning, is there something like a litmus paper or reactive chemical like testing pool water one can use? Any and all suggestions are welcome, I apologize if I sound like a total noob, and I'm going to pour myself another 73rd Virgin Lager, as I call this inaugural batch. :ban:

Welcome to homebrewing. It's a very rewarding hobby. Lots to learn here and I recommend going back and reading old threads. You'll pick up lots of knowledge that way. I also recommend visiting www.howtobrew.com for reference purposes.

To measure alcohol content, you need to get a hydrometer and hydrometer jar. Put some unfermented wort in it and take the reading and write it down ( a brew log is a good thing to start now). After it is done, take another reading and you will be able to calculate it.

Lots of people start with Mr. Beer - there is no shame in it. It's a good, inexpensive way to see if this is something that you might like. I'm glad you ended up with something good; just wait - it gets better!!
