Just curious what you guys think of this scenario.
Hypothetically, if someone forgot to take an OG and then remembered. Let's also say that person had about 1 qt of volume in the kettle that was too sludgy to put into the fermenter. How accurate would that OG reading be?

I assume that it depends entirely based on the sludginess of the remaining wort.

hypothetically, if you were expecting an OG of 1.049 and the sludge wort came out at 1.058, would you be worried?

(this is all hypothetical, of course, and there's no way this happened to me yesterday)
 
If, when you put the sludge containing wort in the hydrometer jar it settles to the bottom then it has the power to effect the hydrometer reading in which case you let it settle before inserting the hydrometer into the clear wort above. A reading taken in the clear wort above should be accurate. If, OTOH, the sludge does not settle after standing then it is of the same density as the wort and the reading should again be accurate.
