After chilling the wort and transferring it from the brew kettle to the fermentation bucket I pulled a sample or wort for a gravity reading. There was a fair amount of floating debris in my test sample. How much will that change my hydrometer reading? The Extra Pale Ale extract kit I was brewing called for a 1.045 OG and I was reading 1.050. The measurement was taken at 60 degrees also.

Particles in suspension will have little effect on the reading (within limits of course). If you followed the recipe, added all the extract, and topped up to the proper volume, your reading should be pretty close (I would guess +-.002). If not, the most common cause is incomplete mixing of boiled wort with top-up water.
