If you're looking for a decent starter kit, and can afford something in the $150 price range, check out:
Midwest Supplies Intermediate Kit Add in a candy thermometer and a stockpot (assuming you don't have one laying around the kitchen) and an extract kit... You're in the $150 zone. If that seems totally unreasonable, there's the
Coopers Kit for about $100. It should make decent beer for the price, and the kits aren't bad. If you really want to slum it, or start of where most of us got hooked, there's always
Mr Beer which starts at $40. Don't expect to get your favorite microbrew from this one, but if you ignore the directions included in the kit, and read the
Mr Beer thread here at HBT, throw out the Booster, and forget all about table sugar as a beer additive, decent beer is a real possibilty.
Ask lots of questions here, but always use the search button first. Odds are, someone else has asked it first. Good luck, and good beer. Kanpai!
