Hi
I’m a beginner at home brewing and i decided to try and brew mead.

I thought that i might added a lot of yeast. And since I don’t have an airlock and i was too lazy to buy one. I put a condom instead. Now there is foam in the condom.

It’s been about 3 hrs since i locked it.

Did I ruined it? Can it be fixed? Can i change the airlock or i’ll ruin everything?

The foam picture is attached

That's going to explode and make a huge mess. Get an airlock or blow-off tube. Did you sanitize the condom before using it? Your beer might be ok

Everything is sanitized. I want to change the “airlock” but I don’t know of that won’t destroy my beer.

That only thing that will do your beer in right now is bad sanitation so if you sanitized the condom you're probably ok. Exposing the beer to oxygen won't hurt it since fermentation is so active. You need to get that thing off and put a proper airlock on it because it's going to continue expelling a lot of CO2 for a few days.

Steve, you're probably going to have a mess when you swap that out. I would've recommended a blowoff tube, but it's too late for that now unless you have a local Homebrew supplier.

I guess you can swap that one for another. Just try to sanitize the new balloon and minimize the time that it is open to the outside while you are making the switch because you don't want anything getting in there. I suppose if you pinch it off as close to the fermenter as possible you might be able to keep the foam from going everywhere when you go to remove it.

Lol the comments are hilarious guys!

Well i did replace it with another one and i made sure everything is sanitized and i’m rea Not sure if that would work at this point i’m just experimenting and i’ll make sure to update you!

Btw i have another one been sitting for two days now and it’s fermenting with no problems and guess what? I used a condom as an airlock on that one too. Aaand it’s not even used!

Anyways if i got it right i’ll invite you over

Just asking, did you remember to poke a hole with a needle? A balloon (or condom in this case) works as an airlock only if there is a tiny hole or two to let the exces pressure out, otherwise it just builds up pressure and eventually explode or pop off and fly who knows where.
