Finally had a chance to brew my first batch, realized after cleaning up I didn't add a blowoff tube. How much Star San would I need for 1 gal of water? If I have a blowoff swmbo will kill me lol.

thanks,

1 ounce for 5 gallons, so 1/5th of an ounce for 1 gallon. edit: So 1.2 teaspoons, or 6 mL.

I find it's easiest to mix up 2.5 or 5 gallon batches because of the built in measuring bubble on the star-san bottle having clear 0.5 and 1 oz marks on it. I don't know about you, but I don't own anything that can measure small volumes very accurately.

Also, I don't know if this has been anyone else's experience, but I have used plain tap water for my blow-off jar/bucket several times and haven't experienced any contamination yet. Usually I find that if I really need the tube, the blow-off jar/bucket will get so full of blown-off krausen that I really doubt the pH of the solution remains in the right range for star-san to even work, unless you're dumping and refilling it every few hours.

I just save the measuring syringes I get when my kids get medicine, or if you are kid free you can buy them at the drugstore for $2. They are perfect for mixing up 1G of starsan in my bug sprayer.

+1.060 I completely agree. Stop in RiteAid or the likes, as most of those places will even give away childrens medicine droppers. Perfect for measuring Star San....

I use 6 ml of Star San mixed in 1 gal of distilled water. Using distilled water I don't have to worry about the PH level and it last for many many months...

I use a plastic medicine cup (used for kids medicine - looks like a plastic shot glass with markings). I marked the 1.2 tsp level with a black marker since I always mix up my starsan 1 gal at a time.
