Seriously. My cat has always been kind of a lush. You couldn't put down a glass of wine and walk away from it if she was in the room without returning to find her head in the glass, lapping away. I discovered this when she was about 8 months old, after she finished about a half glass of wine and staggered around for the evening.

She's never been a fan of commercial beer, except a little bit of darker, roastier brews. Well, I've got a dunkelweizen that she literally begs for. She's a very quiet cat except when it comes time to feed her a treat, when I'm making tuna-anything, or now when I crack open a bottle of beer. I just dip in a finger and let her lick off the drops. Two fingers or so and she's content to let me finish the brew in peace. But she has been known to go after any residue on the sides/bottom of the glass. SWMBO does not approve, insisting it's bad for her. I think I have the coolest cat in the world.

Is it safe to give her a nip now and then? And why the hell does she prefer dark brews?

In any event, glad to know my cat, at least, also approves of my home brew. :p

In my experience cats that start drinking at an early age like your cat eventually start to hang out with other cats that will lead them to worse habits (smoking, drugs, casual sex). You really should get a handle on this situation as soon as possible.

Dogs on the other hand seem to handle their alcohol responsibly.

That's awesome. My cats hate beer and make weird faces when they smell it. I think it might be the alcohol smell or carbonation bubbles that put them off. One of my cats will eat hot wings and lick hot sauce off plates :drunk:

maybe you could start by taking the cat's weight into account. if you weigh 200 lbs and can handle 10 beers, if the cat weighs 2 lbs, maybe ist 1/10 of a beer or something like that.

Or maybe you should not let the cat have any. It's a cat for cryin' out loud! Be responsible about your pets.

My cat also loves homebrew. I've read that cats don't metabolize alcohol very well so I try to keep him away, but a few fingertips worth is a treat.

The day I brought my cat home he was a three pound baby. I poured a shot of tequila, set it on the counter, went to the bathroom and by the time I came back he had drank half the shot. He staggered to the back of the couch and passed out. I thought I had killed him, but he is healthy and strong today, five years later, both by my perceptions and my vets.

My Exwifes poodle dog loved homebrew. The damn thing could drink a whole bottle. She got the dog in the divorce settlement.

She can have as much as she wants, but she can't drive my truck !

I would say do an experiment.

1. Go behind the Chinese restaurant and pick out a cat that is about the same size as yours.
2. Swing by the liquor store and pick up a box of wine.
3. Let stunt kitty drink out of the box until it dies.
4. Measure amount left in box.
5. Do math and figure out how much stunt kitty drank.
6. Give your kitty less than this.

Your welcome.

+1

We are not worthy.

I also have a cat that's a bit of a lush. A few years ago we had a 4th of July party with some sort of watermelon punch (spiked with plenty of vodka). He kept finding people's half-empty cups on the ground....

Turns out he's kind of a belligerent drunk, though. He spent the rest of the evening attacking people's ankles.

It isn't surprising that your cat prefers the darker beers, because they are likely to be maltier. Generally speaking, most animals like malt, but especially cats. What do they give cats to ease up hairballs? A malt remedy.

I used to have a cat that would sit next to me and patiently wait for me to take a sip of my beer, and then he'd want to lick the top of the bottle.

A little bit isn't going to hurt, but their tolerance for alcohol is obviously going to be quite low.

I just tried to give mine some awesome stout and the cat felt that the tiny bit warranted a full body cleaning to get the flavor off the tongue :drunk: My cat is definitely straight as a razors edge.

Stunt Kitty!
LMAO :D

LOL - Epic post.

I've got three cats that I've been ENCOURAGING to take a bit of booze since I adopted each of them, and none of them have opted to try. Bummer...

I do however have an old video (on an equally old cell phone) of my old rabbit (RIP) playing with a bunch of empty beer bottles on the floor. THAT was hilarious.

my sister's cat is one of the most human-like i've ever met. the vet apparently thinks he's autistic (not kidding)

aroung christmas time i was drinking a hot buttered rum and he was on my lap. he wrapped both paws around the cup and pulled it towards himself and smelled it. then he made a very dissatisfied face, and pushed it back towards me with both paws. never seen him get interested in beer, though.

the cat i lived with growing up, though, would roll around and purr when my dad was brewing. she lives with me now, but doesn't seem nearly as interested anymore.

Hmmm... I'll have to do some experimenting with this. I could see something malty. He's a big cat, so his tolerance should be a bit higher...

My doesn't move much and doesn't really get excited about anything except cantaloupe. Open a can of tuna, wet cat food or cracking crab? Nothing. Stick a knife in a cantaloupe anywhere in the house... bam, there's the cat.

Ask the vet.
