I just ordered a 20 gal SSB kettle hoping to increase my yield from a day’s brewing from one Sanke keg (23L) to two sanke kegs (46L).

Having considered the maths though it seems that my cooler (mash tun) will be a limiting factor.

I use a 3 tier gravity system (pid controlled electric kettle, cooler, pot). I fly sparge.

The maximum capacity of my current cooler/ mash tun is 35L.

Based on my brehouse efficiency and boil off rates, I now do an average gravity (say 1.055) 23L batch using 5.5kg malts, which I mash with 14L (2.6 L/Kg) of water and sparge with 24L of water. I collect 32L which after the boil and trub losses leave me with 24L in the fermenter.

To double my batch I would need to collect around 60L in my brew kettle. Assuming similar efficiency my malts would increase to around 10Kg which I would need to mash with 26L of water. Per my estimates 1kg of malt takes up 2L of space so all in all, to stick to my 2.6 L/Kg mash thickness, I need total mash tun capacity of 46L(2*10kg= 20L + 26L).

Other than upgrading my mash tun (which is not an easy option as no one carries 50L coolers where I leave and shipping for such a large item would be prohibitive) what other options do I have??

Mashing 10kg of malt in 15L of water is probably not an option (grist too thick).

Adding DME sounds counter intuitive (why would I go into all the trouble to lauter only to add DME at the end).

You aren't going to get enough wort out of a single mash. If you can't get a larger mash tun, you could get a second one and do two mashes at the same time.

Ok, change of plans!

I found this SS coolers online which seem like a worthile upgrade.

I can start with my current lauter system (tap, fittings, false bottom, thermometer, sparge arm) with a view to upgrade in the future.

70L should be enough even for the high gravity beers (say: 16kg of grain = 32L + 2,6*16 water= 40L ).

I will have the added benefit of moving into a full SS setup.

Shipping to my place is €35 so total cost is €150 seems reasonable!

Any thoughts before I pull the trigger??
