I am fairly new to brewing, in fact my fourth batch is chugging away now. The whole reason I got into homebrew is because I wanted to create my own recipes and make something that is entirely mine. To date I have only purchased some partial mash kits. I have begun expanding on the partial mash and implement dry hopping and even adding some additional spices such as orange peel etc... I really want my next batch to be something I came up with on my own but am having a difficult time deciding what exactly to use. I really like pale ales and IPAs and have a decent understanding of some of the basic grains, hops etc... I am not looking for recipes, just ideas on where I can start and put together my own recipe and get an idea of what to expect. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

It's a little old, but Designing Great Beers is a good read. Palmer also has a nice section on creating recipes in How to Brew. There are many more options, as well. Deathbrewer has a good sticky on the forum about this, as well. You might start with a style you are familiar with so you can judge more easily how you did.

I would suggest keeping it simple and like the prevous poster said picking a style you know more about.

Check out brew toad.com and play with it.

I looked at other recipes and ingredient kits to see what they consisted of and worked on my own recipes. Then I post them here and ask for opinions.

There are several online recipe calculators out there. I just went ahead & bought Brewsmith2. You can set it up to do all the calculations for you. But the best part is,after you plug in the BJCP style you want,it uses a graph to tell you where you are as you input ingredients. Makes it easy to see how to adjust your recipe in terms of OG,ABV,SRM,IBU,etc.

I used Hopville, now BrewToad.com, also BrewTarget brewing software. I just plug in what I'm thinking about, and it gives me a rough idea of what to use. I just did this with my IPA that I just made. I used a Munton's IPA Extract can, a can of Briess Light Extract, 1# Crystal 60L, and some Citra Hops for aroma....

I had a taste from the hydrometer yesterday, and it came out great....

I've done AE IPA's as well as partial mash ones. It depends on what brewing style you want to do. I have recipes for both. The PM one I worked out in BS2.
