I had a "genius" idea of filtering my beer through a funnel with a mesh screen when I was racking from my primary to my bottling bucket. Now I'm hearing I probably ruined my beer from exposure to oxygen. The beers in the bottle now so I guess I'll just wait and see. Anybody had experience with this?

It's possible it got aerated but probably not as much as you might think. I typically will "filter" on the suction side of the siphon using a hop mesh bag tied around the auto-siphon. It at least catches the larger particles. Also when you siphon keep the level of the siphon only a few inches below the level of the beer to avoid sucking crap off the bottom so much.

That wet cardboard taste takes a little time to develop. So drink em as soon as they are carbed up.

That's a good idea with the hop bag. I will try that next time. Hopefully by batch turns out ok!

Did you let the beer splash during transfer? If not then you're ok. Don't sweat it too much.

Ya it splashed quite a bit from what I remember.

Well, don't do that next time. :D

Just drink them as soon as they are done carbonating. You absolutely DID oxygenate them, so hopefully it wasn't an imperial stout that you plan on aging for any amount of time.

You MIGHT get a stale flavor, but I don't think it will be too severe as long as you drink them up quickly.

Maybe not the best move to make when transferring to your bucket but I doubt you've 'screwed the pooch' ... t'will be fine... like what was said earlier, the ill effect of oxidation takes some time to manifest and can be slowed by keeping the beer cold once its carbed...

dont think my beer ever lasted long enough to get any sort of oxygenated. i also havent aged anything. not the most patient man

Appreciate it guys. New to this stuff and definitely learning as I go. A couple batches down and learned something every time. Love This site for The great info and learning opportunities .
