Last night I was putting away some of my siphon hoses and thought I'd pitch a question out there to see if someone has a good idea or 2.

When I'm done with a brew I rinse my siphon hose and autosiphon by pushing a gallon of sanitizer through them at teh end of the brew day. Then I hang them till they are dry (I try to hang them in front of a window because it seems like they dry faster there). Once dry I coil them and store them in my 'brew box' (a plastic tool box that I keep my assorted brew tools in) till the next time I need them-- when they get sanitized at the start of the process.

Anyone have any ways of washing or drying their siphon hoses?

I use all clear hoses for anything that carries liquid so that I can see their condition and the condition of the stuff in them. Even on my fridge-- which came with red beer lines. I'd rather be able to see that they are clean than trust it. : )

That is indeed a big benefit. When I was about to push a batch from one keg to another, I noticed some gunk in the hose I use to connect the 2 kegs. I usually keep sanitizer in this hose since it is to hard to get everything out due to the ball lock connectors at the end. But since I was unsure about the nature of this stuff I just replaced the hose. I would not have noticed that if the hose would have been black.

I'm lazy with cleaning and such. I just push water through and shake them off. Then I roll them up and store them. If something starts growing I'll throw the hose out.

Thats what I do. I reminded my self yesterday why I dont like to leave my siphon hoses soaking in the Idaphor sanitizer... Now they are light brown. : (

I rinse mine in hot water and hang them to dry. I always sanitize them before use, anyways, so as long as they are rinsed well and dried I don't see the need to sanitize them right after use.

I used to get concerned about coloration of the hoses, but the BYO 'wizard' says he doesn't worry about that, so I don't either. As long as there are no cracks or obvious defects in my hoses I use them.

I usually employ the rinse and store method. Depends if I have any sanitizer mixed after using them whether I will just rinse with water or use the sanitizer. Prior to each use, they're going to get sanitized anyway. Also, after 4-5 brews, I buy a new set of hoses just to be safe. Considering they cost approx $2 for 5 feet at the local hardware store, it's a cheap investment.

My beer hoses on the fridge are clear for the same purpose as stated in korn's original post. I want to see what's going through and if anything's gunked up in them.

You can see the pic in my gallery of how mine are stored. I wash them thoroughly after every use by spraying them out with the bottle washer contraption that hooks to my kitchen faucet. Then I always run them through some star-san (it has bug killing ability) and then they get hung up on the the wall hooks so they can drip dry (inside and out) thoroughly. Obviously before use they are soaked in star-san again.
