So I'm making 5 gallons of hopped cider and was wondering if anyone here has done this before. Right now I'm thinking of only adding 0.5 oz of lemondrop hops to the 5 gallons of cider I have brewing, but I have a total of 1oz so I could do that too. I just don't want to over hop it is all. So if anyone has experience here that'd be great.
 
How much hops do you typically add to a batch of beer this size? Just to get a rough idea for comparison.

I understand it varies so what would be a lot for five gallons and what would be considered light?
 
I know u/brulosopher likes to dryhop his cider. His first dry hop article used 1.6oz of amrillo . 5 of something else.


I've only done it once, but I would probably do the whole 1 oz since that's what you have, for 3 days.
 
I was under the impression that when you dry hop you keep it in till it falls out of suspension. What would happen if I kept it in longer than three days?
 
Well from what I understand, leaving it for too long risks vegetal flavors. But I don't think that starts happening to about 7 days or more.

I would wait till a few days before bottlingkegging and dry hop then back off the dry hops.
 
If I wanted to age this for a few months could I dry hop it now or should I wait?
 
What would the different effects be for dry hopping it now vs later?
 
Hop oils that carry aroma & flavour fade with time. You'd have less of an affect on the beer in the long run if you dry-hopped now.
 
Now what if I were to boil the hops. Would the bitterness last if I aged it then?
 
Some brewers say a long time dry hopping gives the "grassy" sort of flavor. The bitterness would last about the same as if you were making an ale.

You don't want to boil apple juice, but I guess you could make some hop-tea in a little DME/water wort and boil the hops in that...

I have always assumed that any hopped cider was dry-hopped. I very well could be wrong, but that's my assumption.
 
Usually just dry hopped. What I would probably do if I want some hop tea would be to make my priming mixture, boil that down with some hops and add that in. Or boil some water and your sugar additions with hops if you plan on raising the abv via sugar (I use apple juice concentrate)
