Hello there,

I'm brand new to this forum. I've been growing these German Northern Brewers for the past 6 years in Chicago, IL. Every year I've been having this same issue where the leaves start to crack/split, some shrivel or look deformed, and the edges look burned. I usually get around 1 ounce dried from each bine, but the location is not the sunniest so it's hard to tell if the yield is affected by this issue. I cannot find evidence of any pests (aphids, thrips, etc.) and I only use a light layer of compost a couple times a year. Any help would be much appreciated.

The shriveled leaves with yellow and brown edges (your second photo) look like symptoms of leaf hoppers. Look on the underside of the leaves for them.

OK. Is this the insect you're talking about?

I'll take a look today, but I've been extremely vigilant with trying to find the culprit over the past few years and have never found a single pest. I'll keep looking though. I'd be much happier if I could find one so at least I know how to fix the issue.

Is there any chance this could be a micro nutrient deficiency or result of over watering?

Thanks!

Yep. Here's what type of damage they cause on mine: https://image.slidesharecdn.com/hop...t-management-filotas-42-638.jpg?cb=1464628414

There seems to be ground zero where they attack the leaf and then a general yellowing along with a crinkle or shrivel in that general area which leads to more necrosis and blackening of the majority of the leaf.

Are you growing in containers or in the ground? The reason I ask is that there generally are more and stranger issues that come about when growing in containers as opposed to in the ground.

Looks like insects to me. Spray with Sevin once a week for a few weeks and see if anything improves. Make sure to spray the undersides of the leaves.

Got it thanks. These are in a raised bed, but pretty much in the ground now as they have started popping up outside of the raised bed. I have new crowns of Chinook, Cascade, and Centennail that I'm starting in containers this year and want to make sure nothing spreads to those as they are still pretty young.

Looks like pests might have infested your plants. You should check them once more. You can even try some pesticide sprays that are available in the market. They can provide your plants some relief. If they also does not work. You can call some professional pest controllers like Pest Control Branford CT, Pest Control Cheshire CT, Pest Control CT, Pest Control Hamden CT or can also look similar in your area for your help. Professionals have years of experience, they can tell you just by seeing your plants whether it is infested or not.

If you want to be old-fashioned about it, you can try what I do when my hops have spider mites. I take a spray bottle of water and add a little squirt of dish liquid, then liberally spray the leaves. It’s non toxic and cheap, and works like a charm.
