Hey all.
I brewed this modified kit yesterday afternoon about 5:00 or so.
Ironmaster Irish Stout Can 4lbs
Briess DME (Dark) 3lbs
Clover Honey 1 lb
Steeped 1/2 lb of oatmeal and 1/2 lb 2-Row for the conversion enzymes.
Just used the yeast that was provided.
At 7:30 this morning it had a huge blowout of the airlock. :rockin:
I had topped it off to about 6 gallons in a 6.5 plastic bucket, won't be doing this again, and it seems this one was just too ready to ferment for that little headspace. I had done this before with smaller beers, but this one was a totally different animal. I took it back to the kitchen and cleaned the top off and replaced the airlock. I had to take the whole lid off to clean it since it was covered in overflow. I only had it off about one minute to run it under the hottest water from the tap and I also cleaned the inside of the lid and resanitized with no-rinse sanitizer. Everything looked and smelled great too! I thought that the worst was over so I thought cleaning the lid and the airlock would fix the issue, no dice.
It overflowed the new lock again in about 10 minutes.
So now I have it set up with a blow-off tube stuck in the middle of my 3 piece airlock and it seems to be just chuggin along again. Just checking to make sure this is the common wisdom on this type of problem or should I be doing something else that will yield better results?
P.S. I would have put up a picture of the overflow but I was way too worried about the wife seeing it before I got it cleaned up, so I quickly fixed it up while she was still asleep.
