I have shopping in my local homebrew shop for 3 years now but would like to start purchasing online. What are some of the websites recommended and why. Have any of you had problems with your ingredient quality when you received it, and if so what happened and what website was it.

I am a big fan of More Beer. Never had a problem with anything I've ordered. Lots of options out there though.

My first choice is ritebrew.com as they typically have the lowest prices on grains and being one state over their shipping is typically less expensive.

I have also purchased from Austin Homebrew Supply.

I have no complaints about either place.

I've purchased grains from Austin Homebrew before and received grains that were virtually uncrushed (I specified that I wanted them milled). I contacted customer service and they sent replacement grains that were supposed to be appropriately crushed however they were of the exact same quality as the first shipment. I will say, however, that customer service was really nice about handling the whole thing, they just unfortunately didn't fix the problem.

Adventures in Homebrewing always seems to have really good deals. Nikobrew is great for hops. Midwest is okay but usually pretty expensive with shipping. I think those are all of the places I've ordered online.

I like MoreBeer as well. I usually order enough to get the free shipping, their prices seem good compared to the other big sites as well. I've never had to deal with their customer service but I hear good things about it.

Austin Homebrew is good as well, I like that you order malt in increments. But, I have to pay sales tax, so if I'm doing that, I'd rather just go up to my LHBS.

What I generally do is order equipment/stuff I need in bulk from MoreBeer, and get hops/yeast or other small stuff I need from my LHBS.

Label peelers is my go to for most of my grains and hops. They run some great deals through the year and most of my shipments get here next day because they are so close.
I also have purchased alot of stuff from Northen Brewer and Adventures in Homebrewing. I haven't had any issues with any of them.

I have used many and have been happy with all with each order. I have switched around for certain kits (when I did kits), finding a store that had all the ingredients for a recipe, and finding organic malt.

My two current OHBS stores are:

Barley & Vine, primarily because it is almost local. Online, B&V sells grains by the ounce. However, by email, B&V will sell grains in smaller fractions including to the gram. IOW, they will match a scaled down recipe. OTOH, they don't have the market to offer organic. I have not tried their kits, which seem to have a good reputation locally, but I discovered B&V after I stopped using kits.

Northern Brewer is one of three OHBS that carries organic LME that I know of. They seem to have about the widest inventory. Their kits are very good.

Others:

Maltose Express has superb kits, most of which are from their books Clone Brews and Beer Captured, plus many "new beer recipes" that have not yet been published in a book.

Austin Homebrew, mention in posts above, has probably the largest collection of kits, many hundreds of very good styles of their own and at least 1000 clones.

Seven Bridges Cooperative the most extensive organic store.

Brew Brothers grains to 1/10 pound.

Boulder Fermentation Supply very good source for gluten free malts.

Not sure why you are wanting to order online if you have a LHBS? I have never had any issues ordering anything online I use to do it all the time from various websites before I realized I had LHBS available to me.

The reason I ask is because the shipping costs will eat you alive. For example if you order 9lbs of 2 row which cost around $15 dollar then you have to pay $12 dollars to ship it... so you just double your price for brewing. I don't know why shipping is so high but every site has been like that.

I like Ritebrew also. Fast to ship and the prices are great.

I've had good experiences with every online retailer I've ordered from. I've used Northern Brewer, MoreBeer, Adventures in Homebrewing, and Home Brew Supply. For grains and hops, I have really liked my experience with Home Brew Supply. I have been crafting some pale ales and wheat beers and they had everything I was looking for, whereas others would be missing out on 1 or 2 ingredients. I wasn't looking for the most esoteric ingredients, but it was still nice to be able to order from one place. Their prices are competitive and they ship pretty fast (although MoreBeer for some reason seems to arrive within hours of my order!).

I recently ordered from Home Brew Supply and shipping was $7.99, I think. Products were good and everything showed up the day after I ordered.

Austin Home Brew Supply was also a great experience. I've ordered a lot from them. Inexpensive shipping and the products I received were good.
