HLT out of a cooler

I've had an HLT made out of a 10 gallon cooler for a long time, just recently changing to a keg. It works well, but that graph is misleading. It takes about 90 minutes to heat up 8 gallons of water from room temperature to strike temperature. (I had a 1500w element, mounted upright like that also.). Keep in mind that you turn off the element when you get to about 3 gallons or so, because you don't want to dry fire an electric element.

I use a round cooler for my HLT. But all I did was install a ball valve with elbow on the inside. While I mash I heat my sparge water in my boil kettle then put it in my HLT. Then put it on the top shelf on my stand and sparge.
