brand new to brewing advice is welcome getting ready to buy the equipment but may just go with a Mr. Brew to start?

Welcome OldGuy.. heck, you ain't that old :D Living where you do, you must be an avid fisherman or into boating.. what a great looking lake. Is that lake what the Lahontan Trout is named for?

Hey, I've had a few Mr Brews.. I didn't care for them.. but, wish I still had them.. as well as the ones I passed off to my sons. They got rid of them too.. probably never used them. I thought they'd be good for making RootBeer and Ginger Ale..

Going thru my junk, I found a bottle of MrBeer I made about 15 yrs ago.. Opened it and arggh. The bottle was partially collapsed. The bottles, unless they have seriously changed are gas permeable.. Kinda means you have to drink what's bottled 'relatively' fast.. which ain't all bad. Also, the bottles are big.. better have a partner to help or get :drunk: :mug:

I'd guess Mr Beer can make pretty good beer.. but, for my money, it's expensive to use their components.. malt, etc. Should be great for trying to come up with new recipes tho. I have my eye on a set that I'm going to try to get next week if it's still avail for $10.

Good luck. Lotsa great folks here that seem quite willing to help.

Not too sure about Mr Brews, but the Mr Beer kits are horrible. I'd hardly consider them brewing using powder and water is no more brewing than making Easy Mac is cooking.
If you think brewing is a hobby you'd like to get into for a while, invest in a brewers Starter Kit (~$130) from a brew store or Northern Brewer. Get an extract kit or two and learn that way. They are great to learn the brew process and fundamentals, at least until you get comfortable enough to jump to all-grain brewing and can really jump start your new hobby!
Enjoy!
