Hello fellow flocculators.
N00b brewer here (5 successful extract batches). I am pondering the prospect of going AG and just curious what the main difference is between steeping and mashing. Seems to me like pretty much the same concept with just a difference in amount/type of grain and rinsing techniques.

Hey and welcome to HBT,IMHO AG mashing will give you a better tasting beer and you can also do step mashing and decoctions for more recipe possibilities! Go for it!!

Hello and welcome.

I spent about 20 years down there(Torrance, Carson, Pomona)! Can't say I miss the traffic:cross:

Steeping brings out mostly the color and some flavor of the grains but no conversion, hence the need for dry or liquid extract(sugars). Mashing causes the grains to release their sugars along with flavor and color. A little bit more work but a great way to make beer IMO. One nice thing about AG is it can be alot cheaper per batch than extract, you just need to invest in some extra equipment in the beginning.

This is a great place to get help about brewing so be sure to ask all your questions. There are no dumb questions here(maybe some dumb responses, but just ignore them;)
