You can disregard the third question unless you are near SW MO:
I know very little (verging on NOTHING) about wine. Regardless, I've the opportunity to assist with some wine-making and I'm enjoying the education/adventure.
I'm looking at approximately 500 Chambourcin vines that will most likely yield 2-3 lbs per vine (mostly 3rd year vines, some 2nd year). I've helped net them and they are probably 2 weeks from being ready to harvest.
I'm reading as much as I can about the early stages: First day harvesting (brix, pH, TA testing/adjustments, etc).
Available equipment is currently limited to a stemmer/crusher and couple of 3 barrel (beer world - 90 gallon) vats for primary. If I'm doing the math correctly, approximately 1250 lbs of grapes will equate to:
- 100 gallons. (Get buy with one vat).
- 500 bottles of wine. (Oh, crap).
First question:
Is my math right?
Second question:
For that amount of grapes/wine, what can I get by with for a press?
Third question:
Whatever that press might be, does anyone have one they would loan/rent????
