OK, the Nukey Brown Ale just started boiling, and I just noticed a potential problem.

The inventory of the kit calls for .5 oz of Kent Goldings hops to be added at 10 minutes. However, Northern Brewer seems to have included a full ounce of the Kent Goldings, rather than .5 oz. I called customer service and the retail order line, and both are closed right now.

Has anyone else had this discrepancy? Or maybe someone has enough experience with Newcastle clones that they know whether it should be .5 oz or 1.0 oz ?

It is quite common if a recipe calls for less than an ounce to just ship an ounce. That way they only need to stock one packet size. Just dump the hops in a pile & eyeball half. Close enough.

Stick the rest back in the packet, tape shut and freeze.

Uh oh. I just made that kit last week myself, and I didn't even think to check the amounts in the packages compared to the recipe. I just dumped the whole pack in, assuming it was the right amount. Oh well, I guess I'll just see how it turns out ... can't be too bad!

All done, cleaned up, and seeing action in the airlock. :)

Thanks for the info... I didn't want the Nukey to be too aromatic, since this is going to be my draft beer for guests who aren't into hoppy beers (BMC-ers!) and of course it's going to be a good session beer for me, too. :D (I'm throwing an Oktoberfest party, and everyone is eager to taste my beer, even though most of them are BMC-ers!)

Everything went swimmingly! Got a chance to try out my newest DIY creation--two 25' coils of 3/8" copper refrigeration tubing. One immersed in ice water as a pre-chiller, one in the wort as an immersion chiller. It went from boiling to 80 degrees F in under 15 minutes. :ban: I didn't use any written instructions this time either... think I'm starting to get the hang of this.

Frothdaddy, I bet your beer will be great! I'm actually curious to make a Newcastle clone with a bit more hop action. I mean, I do like the Nuke as it is, but sometimes I crave a little more pizazz since Newcastle can come off as a bit "one dimensional" when your palate is used to more exotic brews. Cheers! :mug:
