I gave my buddy a couple home brews and he just got back to me and said he thought it had a bad smell but it tasted good. He said it was a stale beer smell, but was carbed had good head and tasted good. So I popped one tonight, smelled from the bottle and I caught a sour milk smell. It tasted good. No off flavors, no different than the last one I drank, and I did not smell the odor in the glass. So what could be causing this smell. The beer is a winter porter extract with specialty grain. It had sweet orange peel, juniper berries, and star anise. Other than that a pretty standard porter. Had no problems brewing fermenting or bottling.

Wild yeast on the orange peel? No clue if that could do it or not, but I know wild yeast on fruit can be a problem when I make my ciders.
