(Moved from DIY, hopefully this is the right place)
I just installed a diy copper thermowell in my 10 gallon gatorade cooler/mash tun. I placed it just below the false bottom.
I did this because temperature readings from the top of my mash seemed to be a good 20 degrees below where they should be (and what I measure if I bury the thermometer in the mash and get to the center).
The first water test proved my new thermowell worked just fine.
Then came brew day. Again I get readings a solid 20+ degrees below the center of my mash.
WHY!?!?
P.S. Measuring in the center of the mash can really only be accomplished after draining the mash tun.
