Just purchased Brewer's Best equipment kit #1002 (2 buckets and 5 gal glass carboy). Am now trying to decide on which kit to go with for my first batch. Any recommendations on kits. With warm weather on the way I will probably want to do some sort of Ale, possibly wheat. But not real sure. Definitely nothing dark right now.

Hello back...from Michigan!

I started with the same kit. I have a lot more buckets now! I have a wheat and a Honey Kolsch fermenting now. Those are good summer beers. An IPA is good anytime also.

Welcome, fellow Michibrewer! Glad you're aboard. A good basic extract recipe to start with is a basic ale:

6.6 # LME
1.5 oz Centennial pellet hops, added at 60, 30, 5, and flameout. (Evenly divided)

Five gallon batch.

Welcome Gopher, My 2nd kit was a Brewers Best Creme Ale. It turned out great. Makes a good summer drink. It is the wives favorite so far. BTW, I can't tell you how many hours I spent on the river down there above the Flat Rock dam. I love the fishing down there. dp

You can make just about any beer you chose! Stay away from lagers, but you can make a wheat beer, stout, pale ale, brown ale, etc. For summer, many people like cream ale as a lighter drinking beer. I'm not a wheat beer fan, but many people love a beer like Bell's Oberon in the summer, or Blue Moon. You could consider making something like that if you enjoy those styles.

Hi Gopher40. Greetings from the UP. I know a few people in Rockford, but you're one of the first brewers I've met from there.
Never used that kit (all grain brewer here), but sounds good.

Greets! I actually attended a brewday put on by a member here just a couple of weeks ago in Rockford.

Cream Ale, Steam Beer, Wit, Wheat, Kolsch... Lots of options.

Personally, I'd brew up a Wit, or wheat. Probably the wit. But you don't need a "kit" to brew it. Just find a recipe and order some ingredients.

For a wit, look for Blue Balls in the recipe section here. It's a Blue Moon clone and it's pretty good. I like to zest a couple of fresh oranges (just the outer skin, not the white stuff underneath) instead of using the bitter orange peel sold in brew stores.
