Just wanted to stop by and say hello before I start picking your brains. Iv'e been lurking around for a few days. There is lots of good knowledge here and must say the hospitality and camaraderie on this forum is very refreshing. I also a grow a few bonsais and the people on those forums can be ....... anyway moving on.
A few years back I ran a few batches of wine, but life slowed that train down. I am familiar with the tools but I am trying to learn all the beer terminology.
I have been wanting to try beer for a while. A few weeks ago I was at my sons Taekwondo school talking to another parent that is neck deep into beer brewing and decided to give it a try.
luckily there is a LHBS about 15 minutes from me. I bought a kit and decided on the Muntons Nut Brown Ale as my first batch. But in true fashion I had to make things complicated and decided I wanted to try a few small 1-2 gallon batches first to give me a good idea of the process. Plus, 1 gallon jugs are cheaper then carboys and will allow me to run a few different kinds.
I headed back to the store and picked up a Mr. Beer Weizenbier and some WLP300 or 320. Simple I know, but effective.
I started it last Wednesday night and let it ferment in a 5 gallon carboy. This Wednesday I racked it out into a 1 gallon jug (totally unnecessary I know), again just to the the feel of the process. Now it's hanging out in the 65 degree garage conditioning. I sampled some of it while taking the SG and must say it was surprisingly good. Even my non beer drinking wife found it tasty. If my brew pot comes in today I might go on and do the Nut Brown this weekend. I also have my eye on that Blood Orange Hef. recipe. I will let you all know how my 1 gal. Hef. turns out.
Cheers,

:fro: Randy :fro:

Think I should have put this in the introduction thread. Please move if possible.

Welcome Randy
Its great that you can get into the obsession.
15 min to LHBSwould be great, 45 nmin to mine one way.

Yeah, I was raised in the urban jungle of South Central L.A. (hence the name). Now I'm in Dallas so I have always been in a situation that access to supplies for hobbies were never a problem, which is good because I have a lot of them. I couldn't imagine having to drive hours away or order everything online. Thanks for the greeting.

Good luck! I'm sure your Mr. Beer kit days are soon to end, if you are on this board you will undoubtedly run into multiple recipes that you will want to whip up soon. Also, as mentioned above, good deal on the close LHBS. I dislike having to drive 40 minutes in crazy traffic to get to mine... then getting back home and realizing I forgot to get something.
