Hello to all. I am new here and to brewing itself. I have been contemplating getting started for a little over a year now but was a little nervous about doing it. I recently acquired a simple setup from a coworker who decided to quit drinking all together so got the setup for a decent price. The equipment will need a little cleaning before I can make the first batch since it has sat for a few months in his basement. The only thing I really need to get that seems to be missing is a second carboy although I had thought of just using one of our 5 gallon water jugs we get from our water company.
A little about why I wanted to start this as a hobby. Some years ago while I was in the Army I had the opportunity to visit Germany twice. While there I experienced the beers of the area. I had brought 2 racks home with me but they only lasted so long. I had been searching for more here state side and had one place about 10 minutes from my home that carried it. Eventually they closed and there was no other place to purchase it. I then started to check out the beer clubs but to get the quantities I was after was going to be expensive so I had just gave up. About a year ago I was given a micro-brew to try and enjoyed the flavor and aroma. Ever since then I have been trying one about every week. I recently stumbled across one that had all of the characteristics of the Hefeweizen I used to have in Germany. Since that first beer I was bound and determined to learn to brew some so the price would not break the bank ($11 a six pack). So here I am today joining and hoping to acquire some knowledge to make a great first brew that I can enjoy and know I made it myself. Well enough rambling. See you all around the forum.
Just a side note when I say Upstate I do not mean Albany. I can either throw a stone into Canada or hop the bridge to Vermont in mere minutes!
