Just ordered my basic brew kit from Midwest Supplies. Been wanting to do it for years now and finally made the leap! Excited to get started!!!!

Welcome to obsession, I mean hobby, fellow Illinoisan.

This is a great place to draw knowledge from, so much great stuff.

Good luck & brew on!

Greetings and Salutations fellow resident of The Great State of Illinois (sarcasm intended). This place is great - a lot of very helpful, experienced brewers who are willing to share their insight, all you have to do is ask. The search function will soon become a good friend - as will the stickies in each category.

Cheers!

Greetings from an EX-Illinois resident. Man, I hated the winters there, but I miss having a basement. Hope you have a long and successful homebrewing career.

Hey thanks guys. I got all my stuff from Midwest on a Saturday! Thought that was pretty impressive since I ordered on Thursday and didn't pay for quick shipping.

I did realize that the recipe kit I got was a bit more advanced (2 state fermentation, grains etc) than I was anticipating. I guess go hard or go home!

You'll find on here that most guys, for standard ales at least, skip a secondary and just let it sit in primary until bottling/kegging. Seems to work quite well & is less work

This is going to sound stupid but... After I have my wort and am going to put it in the fermenter is that when I use the carboy? Or do I use the carboy as my secondary fermenter?

Secondly when pouring to the carboy I assume I just use the funnel to do so? Or do I siphon it when I am doing a secondary so as to not disturb it too much?

I know... I know... noob.
