Hello All!!

Just got into brewing about a year ago and recently joined the forum. I had a few questions for the seasoned veterans out there. I have been using hop pellets and after many attempts to filter them out with a strainer only to be clogged I looked into the home made hop strainers. Also maybe adding a valve to my small brew kettle for a possible counter flow chiller in the future. My first question, what do you guys think of the hop filters? Also, I have noticed many different types of valves out there. Are there ones that are preferred over others? I would be using it primarily for transferring wort.

Thanks,

Shaun

i don't know if it's normal because i've only done one brew, but my hops just disappeared. they dissolved into the wort... maybe when i got to bottle i'll need to filter but right now there was nothing in there.

I (and many others) use a fine nylon mesh bag for hops additions. Basically like a big tea bag. I put my hops in the bag, and the bag in the boil kettle. The bag keeps the hop particulates contained, but allows the wort to flow freely. Then afterwards I dump & rinse off the hops from the bag, and throw it in the wash with my laundry to clean it.
