This never happened before. Went to pour my pumpkin ale from keg today. First pour was all gooey, gunk stuff! Next couple cleared up but looked to have alot of floating material. beer tastes great, but is this normal? What happened here?
Totally normal, especially with beers (like yours) that have added starches or a lot of hops. I like to take a little off as it is carbing up, like half a glass at a time, letting it settle for a few days each time. By the time it is all carbed up should be crystal clear!
My first kegged beer was a dry hopped pale ale and I got a lot of hop debris in the keg. So much that I had to take the poppet out of the beer out post to keep it from clogging. Now I cold crash anything dry hopped.
You'll probably notice some gunk left at the bottom when your keg is empty. It usually settles a few inches from the dip tube where there isn't enough flow to pull it out.
I got a cpl of the floating dip tubes (Clear Beer Draught System) for this reason. I drink from the top instead of the bottom where the dregs are so the first pour is clean and clear. If I get a clog it will be at the end of the keg not the beginning so I'll waste less. At least that's the idea. So far so good.
