A short story and a quick question.

I had a batch get infected and not in a good way. I have not stopped thinking about it since Sunday when I saw the disaster in my fermenter. I am traveling for work in La/Santa Monica and will be leaving tomorrow morning.

I just wanted to know if anyone had bought grain and yeast from a homebrew shop and then flew with it. I want to brew as soon as I get home and getting the grain and yeast here is the best option if possible.

I don't expect this is a problem seeing as it is a domestic flight, but like most everybody else, I have never traveled with grain and yeast before!

Cheers,
Matt

You going to be checking the luggage with the grain and yeast in it? I feel like you'd have less issues if you checked it then trying to bring it on as a carry-on.

I've bought grain and yeast and brought it on a flight before. Shouldn't be a problem. I think the only brewing items you'll be stopped from bringing on are cleaners especially liquid ones. You'll be fine.

My mom wanted to see what brewing was about and lives on a different island from me, I brought an entire 1 gallon brew kit + yeast / grain / hops and a powdered cleaner / sanitizer in my carry-on and it was no issue. I did get asked what all that was for, I told them making beer. The guy just smiled and said bring some samples next time :D

Yes, I will be checking it! That is great to hear. Thanks!

Awesome- I feel better about doing this tomorrow!
Thanks for the info!

Welcome to the Terrorist watch list..... ;)

I'm definitely on the German list.
Back in the 90's their airport security was pretty thorough, but they let me fly home with an Alice pack full of Erdinger Dunkelweizen - sixteen of them in carry-on, as a matter of fact. Coming back through Frankfurt in 2010, I didn't pack so well and left a nice folding Buck knife in the bottom of my duffle bag. The Kuwaitis caught it but their English wasn't so good, and I had military orders, so they let me slide.
Not so the Germans. The Polizei was understanding and apologized, but the law is the law. I was summarily charged and released, but the property was confiscated.
