Do you guys/ gals think this is a good deal? (ebay item# 290069459866). It looks really good to me but just wanted to know what you think as I have a cheap WalMart pot now and would'nt mind upgrading for full wort boils and eventually AG:rockin:

You'd still want some sort of strainer to the bottom to seperate the hop material if you plan on using it for a boil kettle, or a manifold or false bottom of you use it for a mash vessel. The price does seem reasonable. I'd check the shipping first, though. It's coming from PA, so it might be pricey.

I was in contact with this guy-he had 46 of these the end of last month. Hooray-there's more..... He states he's used this pot himself and never stuck one fast(even scorched one). Now that there are 53 more I'm really thinkin'. Shane

That's not a bad price for nine gallons. The only other thing I would think about is whether you can get your hands on an old keg for converting; it's real nice to be able to boil in 15.5 gallons, even when doing 5 gallon batches. But, that'll definately work, and it's a fair price.

Good price yes, Great price no. Just make sure of shipping costs. I've been burned many times on shipping costs. I've got all emotional about a item only to get burned on the shpping costs.

For someone who is about to move into the world of apartment AG brewing, what would you recommend to Mash, this ebay kettle (linked by original poster) with a false bottom or converting a cooler and just boiling with my usual lobster pot?

I have this pot and I really like it. Its not the thickest metal but it is a great deal. I like the fact that it has a ball valve and a temp. guage on it too!!! My next move is a 1/2 barrel leagally come by of course and when I do I'll use the 9 gal for boiling water!!! Highly recommend the pot!!!:mug:

I ordered this pot and it has been working great. I use it for boiling and HLT. It was about 30 bucks shipping (to montana). The only problem (minor) is that my immersion wort chiller is obstructed by the 4 inch thermometer stem. It is completely submerged though and hasn't affected the chilling process, its just lopsided.

other issue: As I was excitedly taking out of the box, the handle on the lid popped right off. But the guy immediately sent a replacement.

Just brewed last night in single digit temps!! Old Rasputin clone on Pacman cake. Turned out at 1.078. Most intense fermentation ive had. Had to put on a blowoff hose and clean up this morning. :off: I just had to mention the latest brew! Its about -2 degrees now what should I brew today?

i think it looks cheap.. almost like the first pot i got (10 dollar 5 gal at Fred's)

You could probably make a better quality one yourself...

It is by no stretch of the imagination a cheap pot. Not the highest quality sure, but #304 stainless is #304 stainless. By definition it is 18/8 gauge and the entire family of #304 stainless classifications (light, heavy, regular) are all very similar. The thermometer is actually very good. It does not, however, have a clad bottom. But I don't have a super high btu device, and have never seen scorching. Sure you can do better, but not for the money. It is highly unlikely at that volume unless you find one close by for some kind of deal. It is worth the money, imo. The alternatives are going to a $250 range (for a clad bottom and heavier gauge), and at that point it is feasible to convert a keg if you have access to the tools, and have the time. I am not doubting one could make a better one...but this is not practical for many people.

[edit]Although the pot Torben posted is a good one, but I really dig having the thermometer in the pot especially during cool-down[/edit]

Hey that is a good deal. If I were outdoor brewing, I would have opted for something along those lines. That is the best price I have seen for sure. I stand corrected on the price....now I would say "Where was this link when I bought my pot!", but tbh, the pot I got is great and is perfect in diameter for the stovetop.
