We are looking to replace our old, crappy upright freezer with something a bit smaller and more energy efficient. I could go chest or small upright.

The biggest consideration for me is to get one that is going to be dependable. I don't mind paying a bit more for something that is not going to crap out in a year or two.

Any advice?

I think on brand you will just get a bunch of people saying they like whatever brand they have. I don't think you can much go wrong with any of the big guys. I like my Fridgidaire, my Haier is OK, and the no name brand one I have is about the same as the Haier.

Since you listed efficiency, I recommend a chest freezer, you will find they will save you about $5-10/yr in electricity. A little harder to find that variety of hop that you only have 2oz of though.

For that much savings, I'm not going to sweat it. I'd prefer the ease of being able to find stuff. We had a chest freezer when I was a kid and it was sometimes a pain to dig down to the bottom to find that bag of fruit or hunk of venison.

It's true...although $10 is about 30% savings...

You actually have me considering converting my hops and meat fridge to an upright now...

Do you want to give me your old freezer? And drive it down to me? And throw in a temp controller while you're at it? And get me a job so I don't have to leave it behind when I (probably) move in six months? Oh yeah, and help me pay for rent in a bigger apartment (house downpayment?) so I have somewhere to put it?

Didn't think so.

In order to be somewhat on topic, I will add that my parents have a big chest freezer and even though they are not remotely organized people, they always would keep that somewhat organized by putting all the beef in the pile on the left side, all the vegetables and ice cream in the pile in the middle, all the other meat in the pile on the right, and the microwaveable foods in the baskets on top. With the exception of a few items I could find anything in 30 seconds or less, usually in about 10.

I have a hop pile and a meat pile. That's really all my 5.5cf has room to do. Now imagine trying to find the 2oz of crystal among the pounds of cascade, columbus, centennial, etc.

As for giving you my old one, I just found an upright freezer for free...perhaps you can too! But even if I felt like driving to Michigan (~2 day drive) I don't think the freezer would fit in my Mini.

I guess it's different when it's all hops and you have to read the labels. Didn't really think of that. I got pretty good at recognizing different cuts of meat by sight growing up because we'd just get a half cow's worth of meat once a year.

Yeah, I know, but the real problems are the part where I have to move soon and don't actually have room for a freezer in my apartment. As soon as I move though I'll be looking for at least a mini fridge big enough for fermentation.
