Here's one that I'm sure plenty of people will be able to chime in on... When going after a new apartment (or rental property), how should I pose the question so that I know my propane burners won't be a violation that will get me kicked out? I'm thinking that if they allow propane/gas grills, that these shouldn't be an issue. Especially on a concrete slab. If there's a deck, I would get one of the concrete grilling mats to place under the burner, even though it never gets hot enough at floor level (this is a Blichmann burner on the longer legs).

I'm looking at a few places today, as well as more on Friday (I'll be in Maine all of Thursday at the VMUG Summer Slam event :rockin:, then driving back to MA on Friday) and over the weekend. My intent is to sign papers on a new place before the weekend is out, and start moving in in August. That way it will be an easier move for me. I will use movers for the big items, but the rest will be me and friends. Including my brewing supplies, like the few hundred pounds of barley at my buddy's place. :D

Thoughts? Suggestions??

If it was me I would flat out ask them. Like you said if you can have a gas grill then yoy shoulfd be able to have a burner. obviously brewing is important to yoy so make sure you cover all your bases now to avoid future misunderstandings.

I just don't want to scare them off of accepting my application. I'm not sure if enough people really know how safe it is. Although there is one townhouse I hope to look at that has a garage with it, so I could just use the burners at the entry of that. Far enough away from things to not be a fire hazard, but semi-protected from other things. Plus, it will be easy to partially close the door during the winter and keep some of the cold out.

I'm seriously looking forward to leaving where I currently live. I'm set to look at one place in the morning tomorrow (after a meeting at work, I'll run to see it, then go back to the office) and then at least one or two more at the end of the day tomorrow (starting at about 6-6:15pm). Then later in the week when I'm back in the area. I'm also crossing my fingers that I'll be able to work out a job deal in Brunswick, Maine on Thursday. IF that happens, I'll be moving up that way and loving it. I'll finally be out of MA if that happens. Of course, because I want it so bad, it won't happen.

Move where you can brew.Or dont move where you cant.It will suck. Me and my fiance are finding a house and as a first time home owner its gotta be right so im taking my time cuz i will be stuck with it for a while. Good luck. I think just asking for a grilling area would be ok.

That's a given... Since I cannot brew where I currently live and I would really be hating life if it wasn't for my brew buddy letting me brew with him.

Just like:
"To brew, or not to brew? What the F kind of question is that?" :rockin:

I'm just looking at a clever way to slip the question into the conversation in order to gather if it will be ok or not. IMO, a concrete slab should make it fine no matter what. It's far safer than trying to fry a turkey. It's also not as stinky as something like a Cajun boil. :D Plus, more people can benefit from having good homebrew on hand in the area. Of course, I'll probably need to get tap locks soon after moving. :D

Why not ask if there a problem with a turkey fryer. They can ASSUME you are going to deep fry turkeys, but as long as you don't word it to specifically state you are frying turkeys, then there is no problem. Anyway, it's not a landlord issue, it's a Fire Code issue, so you can ask them for the code related to your area.

I actually just explained what I want to setup to two different agents, and one landlord. The actual landlord had zero issue with me having a gas grill and seemed a bit excited about me brewing beer (in a good way). Of course, it does help that he's Italian (as in actually from Italy) and his brother makes wine. :D Seriously thinking about renting that place. If it wasn't for the location (town, compared with where I work), and a few other things (minor by themselves, but nagging me as a whole), I'd jump on it.

Check the local ordinances. That will tell you whether it's even permissible and what kind of requirements you and your potential landlord will be stuck with. You don't want to sign a lease where the landlord says it's cool but a neighbor calls code enforcement out and then you can't brew anymore.

Slight pause in the home hunt. I'll be interviewing for a job up in Bangor in just over a week. The person I'll be talking with is on vacation until next Monday, so I have a full week of waiting ahead of me. I'm very hopeful for the job in Bangor. I did a quick search of places up in that area and like what I've seen so far. Seriously looking forward to more mild summer temperatures too. :D
