When I was stationed in Germany the locals had a special wine they served during the Christmas fests called Gluhwien (we Americans called it glow wine)

The wine was served hot and had a good deal of spices in it.

I have not had anything like it since and with the holidays coming up I get the notion I should make some.

Does anyone have any ideas for me? Im not experienced enough to come up with anything on my own and google only finds recipes for spiced red wine (the wine we were drinking was made with the spices not cheap wine mulled.)

Thanks!

You can get the Nurnberger Gluhwein at the vast majority of liquor stores across the country. I've yet to not find it (PA,VA, & TN, to be specific). It's the same stuff you'll buy in Germany if you're picking it up in a store there and not at a stand. The bottle looks like this:

Gluhwein and Christmas markets are two great German traditions

If you want to make your own, you can make it pretty amazing with cheap wine. The last time we had a gluhwein party we made ~5 gallons with boxed wine, and it was amazing.

Any dry red will work, cinnimon sticks, cloves, sweeten with sugar to your taste. A little orange juice and rum goes a long way to give it an extra kick as well.

Recipe edit: red wine, sugar, cinnamon sticks, anise, cloves, orange and lemon zest.
