Well, after brewing an extract beer 2 yrs ago, I'm back and doing all grain!
Started doing small batches so I can brew more often and ramp up the learning curve, not just reading. Did an English Bitter that is done and ready to drink (BIAB), tasting better with each bottle (but some significant chill haze...leading to my question):

Have an IPA in primary now, that is a small batch, 1.35 gallons total volume in primary, and I plan to transfer to 1 gal secondary for dry hopping. I'm thinking this presents an opportunity to try gelatin as a possible solution to the chill haze. (and a relatively safe experiment to try on this batch)

So I read that for a 5 gallon batch, you should dissolve 1 tsp unflavored gelatin in 1 cup of cold water (assuming boiled and cooled), then heat to full dissolve without going over 180F.

* Should I then dump the gelatin solution into secondary and rack onto it?

* What ratio of gelatin/water should I use for such a small batch?

* How long should the cold crash with gelatin last? I was going to dry hop in secondary at room temp for 4 days, but if I add gelatin to secondary, should I dry hop in the refrigerator? I'm thinking that dry hopping for 4 days, then putting in fridge for more days would result in loss of the dry hop aroma.

Thanks!!
Brian

Gelatin is cheap so i would just use 1 tsp but 1/2 cup of cold water. Thats all i use.

I would dry hop for 4 days at room temp, then cold crash and add the gelatin in 12-24 hours - it works best with cold beer. You can cold crash however long you want of course but once you add the gelatin you will never go back, its works that well. In such a small batch it will probably be crystal clear in 1-3 days. You will see a noticeable difference within 6 hours in my experience and i never used it in a small batch like that.

No need to boil and cool the water either in my experience and i usually just go up to around 150f - its just to pasteurise it mostly and clear it up, if you go to high it will turn into jello which i done once! I just use the microwave. 3-5 intervals of around 15 seconds stirring between each interval. Its pretty simply to use.

This is a simple vid to get an idea:

I use just a 1/2 cup and i don't wait for it to bloom - i done both i found no difference. And i don't stir until the first interval. Easy peasy.

Great info, thanks Seabrew. I may not sweat the haze on the IPA, but will definitely use the gelatin the next bitter.
thanks!
