I'm just getting back into Homebrewing after more than a 20 year brake, after getting a Mangrove Jack starter brewing kit for christmas.
One of my first memories is watching the old man brew beer in a plastic bin with a couple of bin liners. All I know is what he taught me and what I have read here over the last few days.
Most of the trade talk goes right over my head, I only worked out how to use the Hydrometer properly the other day, as it took me 6 months to get started on the brewing.
A few weeks ago a blog on Wild Apple Cider triggered me into action, I have been making about 2 liters a night (1/2 gal) of a sweet low alcohol Apple Cider, as I didn't know how to use the Hydrometer I would guess that at the most I was getting 3% alcohol in about 3 days quick chilling and drinking, I am happy with the flavour but want to get the alcohol up to over 5%.
Also I have just bottled a 30 liter (6 gal) barrel of Apple Cider that started at 1.050 and ended at 1.000 using a Cider yeast M02, from what I have read here this could be hit or miss as I have gone straight from the fermenter to the bottle as I would have done if it was beer. I had a wee taste last night, it is so dry and bitter I had to had 1/4 Apple Juice and several teaspoons of sugar to make it drinkable.
I will brew the beer that came in the kit next so I know I will have something to drink. So I don't have to ask a whole lot of stupid questions where can I learn about the terminology use in brewtalk.
